Veteran & Military admissions
If you plan to use military education benefits, contact our Veterans Coordinator at UNH.Veterans@unh.edu. The Veterans Coordinator provides guidance on veterans' education benefits and assists students with required forms and certifications for programs including the GI Bill®, Federal Tuition Assistance, New Hampshire National Guard Scholarships and Waivers, VA education benefits for eligible spouses and dependents, MyCAA, and the New Hampshire War Orphans' Scholarship.
Military records for your application
These documents help us evaluate transfer credit for your military service. These requirements apply to all applicants — undergraduate and graduate, and across Durham, Manchester, and Online.
DD214 (veterans only)
Veterans should submit a copy of the DD214 or 2586 form with nature of discharge to verify potential credits earned for military service. Do not submit the original, as you will need it throughout your life to prove your veteran status and establish eligibility for GI Bill and other veterans benefits from the VA, State, and local community. If still on active duty, submit the copy when you are released.
Military transcripts
Veterans are encouraged to request a copy of their military transcripts to be evaluated for possible transfer credits.
Undergraduate application process
UNH offers undergraduate degrees at three locations, each built around a different kind of student experience — a traditional residential campus, a career-focused urban campus, or a fully online format. Select the option below that fits how you plan to complete your degree to see specific application requirements.
Durham (Main campus)
Durham is UNH's traditional residential campus, home to full-time, in-person undergraduate programs. You qualify as a first-year applicant if you've completed high school and never enrolled at another college or university. You qualify as a transfer applicant if you've completed coursework elsewhere and are ready to continue your degree on campus in Durham.
Manchester (City Campus)
The Manchester campus offers UNH degree programs designed around Manchester's working adult and career-focused community, with smaller class sizes and flexible in-person scheduling. You qualify as a first-year applicant if you're starting your degree for the first time, or as a transfer applicant if you're bringing in credit from previous college coursework.
Online
CPS Online lets you complete your degree remotely, on a schedule built for working adults and military-connected students balancing service, career, and family. Most applicants qualify as transfer students, bringing in credit from previous coursework, military transcripts, or professional training — though first-year applicants are also welcome.
Preadmission program
The Preadmission Program allows non-traditional students who may need to strengthen their academic credentials to begin their studies through Continuing Education at UNH, and to use coursework completed during the program as a credential toward admission into a UNH associate or bachelor's degree program. This option is available to applicants across all UNH campuses, including Durham, Manchester, and Online.
How do I participate?
Submit the UNH Transfer Form to the Admissions Office. We accept applications for Preadmission for the fall semester through the end of July; for spring semester, through the middle of December. For your major choice, indicate "Preadmission Program."
Send in your supporting academic records: high school transcript, GED, HiSet, and college transcripts. If you are a military veteran, send a copy of your Military Form DD-214 with the nature of discharge as well as evaluations of any Military Schooling you may have completed while in the Armed Forces.
The Admissions Committee will review your application for the Pre-Admission Program and notify you of our decision. If approved, students register for classes through Continuing Education and work with the University Advising Center (UAC) to select appropriate coursework. The UACC will send you a follow up letter with information about when you should schedule an advising appointment.
How do I pay?
Can I use financial aid?
Provided you have submitted a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form, you are eligible to receive Federal Direct Loans, but will not receive other forms of federal or institutional aid.
Can I use my military educational benefits?
Yes, provided you have completed the necessary governmental paperwork.
How many courses do I need to take?
Students generally complete four to six courses over two semesters, to include ENGL 401-First Year Writing; a quantitative reasoning course, and a science Discovery course. You may also complete introductory courses within the major you intend to pursue.
Graduate application process
If you're pursuing a graduate or post-graduate degree, your application is processed through the UNH Graduate School rather than Undergraduate Admissions. U.S. veterans may qualify for an application fee waiver. If you currently live in New Hampshire and want to claim in-state residency, you'll need to complete a separate veterans residency form and submit it with your application materials — until that's on file, you'll be considered an out-of-state resident.
